SwissTour — User Manual

Tournament manager for chess arbiters: Swiss tournaments paired by the FIDE (Dutch) system, round robins, Scheveningen, knock-out cups and team events. This manual is a step-by-step guide to every menu item and every important button: what it does, how to use it, what to check and where the traps are. It is in English on purpose: FIDE requires an English manual for a program that runs in FIDE Mode. The same guide in Serbian opens when the program is in Serbian (link at the top right).

1. What it is

2. How to read this manual

Every menu item has a card with the same parts: What it does (one or two sentences), How to do it (numbered steps with the exact names of menus and buttons), Check (what the arbiter must look at before going on), Warning (red box: a trap where data is lost or a mistake is easy) and Example (green box: a situation from practice).

TermMeaning
Starting rankThe pairing number of a player in the starting list (by rating). It does not change by itself after round 1 (C.04.2 art. 2.3).
ByeA round without an opponent. The pairing-allocated bye goes to the player left over when the number is odd; a requested absence is asked for in advance.
ForfeitA game not played because a player did not come; it scores, but it is not a played game (no rating, no performance).
Tie-breakA rule that orders players on equal points (Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, Direct Encounter…).

3. Quick start — an individual Swiss tournament

  1. File → New Tournament, choose Swiss Individual, save the file.
  2. Entry → Tournament Data: name, place, dates, number of rounds, Time Control Type, arbiters. Tick FIDE mode if the event is submitted to FIDE (section 19). Press OK.
  3. Entry → Players: add the players (FIDE list or Manual Entry).
  4. Pairing → Pairing Menu… (F6): colour of board 1, then Start Pairing.
  5. Entry → Enter Results: click a board, then the result (or keys 1, 2, 3). Save with Ctrl+S.
  6. Repeat 4 and 5 for every round. Standings → Standings shows the ranking.
  7. At the end: File → Export to TRF-2026… for FIDE, and the printed lists for the organizer.

4. Toolbar and status bar

The buttons under the menu do the same as the menu item in brackets, so that item's card applies.

ButtonSame as
New, Open, Save, Save AsFile → New Tournament / Open Tournament / Save / Save As
Tourn. Data, Enter Players, Rd. Dates, ResultsEntry → Tournament Data / Players / Round Dates / Enter Results
Pairing, Del. RoundsPairing → Pairing Menu; Round → Delete Rounds
Standings, CrosstableStandings → Standings / Crosstable
Players, Results (second group)Lists → Player List / Pairings List
Player CardOne player's card: all games, performance and estimated rating change; choose the player from the drop-down list.
StatisticsLists → Statistics
PrintPrints what you are looking at: the topmost open window, or the main screen.
PGNExport → Export to PGN
Publish, LinkInternet → Publish to ChessResults / Share link

The status bar shows the tournament name, the number of players, the round and FIDE MODE when it is on. The arrows ◀ ▶ next to the round and a click on the round number open Enter Results for the previous / next / shown round.

5. File menu

File → New Tournament

What it does: creates an empty tournament of the chosen system and asks for a file name straight away.

How to do it

  1. File → New Tournament (or New). With unsaved changes the program asks Save / Don't Save / Cancel.
  2. Choose the system: Swiss Individual, Berger Individual, Scheveningen Individual, Team Berger, Team Scheveningen, Team Swiss or Cup Individual (Knock-Out).
  3. For Chess960 tick Chess 960 and choose whether the position is drawn automatically when a round is paired or set by the arbiter.
  4. OK, then choose folder and file name (extension by system: .swt Swiss, .rrt round robin/Scheveningen, .trt team round robin/Scheveningen, .tst Team Swiss, .kot cup).
  5. Tournament Data opens by itself.

Check

Warning: nothing is taken over from the previous tournament. If you cancel the file dialog, the tournament exists only in memory and the automatic save does not work until you save it.
Example: club blitz evening: New Tournament → Swiss Individual → “Blitz Friday” → Tournament Data: 9 rounds, Time Control Type Blitz.

File → Open Tournament...

What it does: opens a saved tournament.

How to do it

  1. File → Open Tournament; with unsaved changes the program asks first.
  2. Choose the file. With paired rounds Enter Results opens, otherwise Tournament Data.
At start-up the program opens the last tournament by itself.
Example – going back to an older version: next to the file are the backups .bak01 (newest) to .bak20. Copy one, rename it to end in .swt and open it.

File → Save (Ctrl+S)

What it does: writes the tournament to its file and keeps a backup of the previous version.

How to do it

  1. File → Save, the Save button or Ctrl+S. Without a file name Save As opens.
  2. The status bar shows “Saved at …”.

Check

Each save moves the backups: the previous version becomes .bak01, the one before .bak02… up to 20. The program also saves every 15 minutes (“Auto-saved at”), once the tournament has a file.
When you close the program (File → Exit, the window's X or Alt+F4) with unsaved changes, it asks Save / Don't Save / Cancel.
Warning: Don't Save throws away everything since the last save (manual or the 15-minute automatic one). Press Ctrl+S after every round.

File → Save As...

What it does: saves under a new name or folder; from then on the program works with the new file.

How to do it

  1. File → Save As, choose folder and name, Save.
Example: before a risky change (deleting rounds, manual pairing) save a copy “Memorial – before round 5.swt”.

File → Import from TRF...

What it does: reads a tournament from a TRF file (TRF-2026, TRF16, TRF06): players, rounds, results, and teams for a team file.

How to do it

  1. File → Import from TRF; choose the file.
  2. Read the message (players and rounds imported, notes on records the program does not use).
  3. Immediately File → Save As.

Check

Warning: the import replaces the open tournament; it does not add players to it. The imported tournament has no file and is not auto-saved until you Save As.
Example: an event run in another program is to be published on ChessResults.rs: export TRF there, import it here, Save As, Internet → Publish.

File → Export to TRF-2026...

What it does: writes the whole tournament in FIDE's newest format, for rating and for the PTC (record details in section 18).

How to do it

  1. File → Export to TRF-2026, choose the file, Save; “Exported to …” confirms.

Check

Example: after the last round send the file to the federation's rating officer together with the PDF standings.

File → Export to TRF16 (older)...

What it does: the same in the older TRF16 format, for programs that cannot read TRF-2026. For FIDE use TRF-2026.

File → Printer Setup...

What it does: chooses the printer, paper (A4/Letter) and margin (0–40 mm) every print preview starts with.

How to do it

  1. Choose printer (or system default), paper and margin, Save.
Kept on this computer, not in the tournament file. Without a printer, Save as PDF still works.

File → Exit

What it does: closes the program.

How to do it

  1. File → Exit (or the window's X, or Alt+F4).
  2. With unsaved changes the Unsaved Changes question appears: Save (saves, then closes; without a file name Save As opens first), Don't Save (closes without saving) or Cancel (the program stays open). With everything saved it closes at once.
Warning: Don't Save loses the changes made since the last save. When in doubt, choose Save.

6. Entry menu

Entry → Tournament Data...

What it does: all data of the tournament in six tabs: General, Tiebreak Criteria, FIDE Titles, Arbiters, Prizes, Links.

How to do it

  1. Entry → Tournament Data (or Tourn. Data); move between the tabs.
  2. OK writes the changes of all tabs. Numbers and dates are checked: a value outside its range (0 rounds, a negative rating, 31/02/2026) is corrected and a message lists what changed; the program also warns when the end date is before the start. The characters < and > are removed from all text.
  3. Cancel or X discards all changes; Help opens this manual; Copy Tournament Data is not implemented yet (it only says so).
Warning: Cancel throws away what you typed on all tabs. Documents & Photos (Links tab) are the exception: what you add or remove there stays even after Cancel.

Tournament Data → General

What it does: basic data and the pairing settings.

How to do it

  1. Name and subtitle, Comments (tick “Show on chessresults.rs” to show them on the site), organizers, website, e-mail, Time Control text (with a reminder of FIDE's minimum for standard rating).
  2. Chief Arbiter, Deputy and Arbiters (several separated by commas; end a name with the FIDE ID to fill the data from the FIDE list).
  3. Federation, Location, FIDE event code, Rounds (1–99; set automatically for round robins and cups), FIDE mode and Acceleration (Baku; individual Swiss only), start and end date, Points for Unpaired Player (the pairing-allocated bye, default 1).
  4. Right side: Sort / Pairing Rating (which rating orders the starting list; for FIDE events International rating), Pairing Based On, Time Control Type (which FIDE rating is used), Variant, Requested Absence (points for Don't Pair Player: 0, ½ or 1, default 0; and whether an excluded player may get a score for the round after round 4).
  5. Team Swiss: Team Pairing Rules (C.04.6, colour preference type A/B, value of the bye, initial colour).

Check

Warning: Baku acceleration is locked once round 1 is paired. The fields Age groups, Registration deadline, Default time, Mutual games allowed, Auto-sort initial ranking, Verify board order and Tournament Type (Real/Test) are only stored in the file for now; they do not change pairing or calculation. Host Color is disabled.
Example: FIDE-rated open, 9 rounds, 90+30: Rounds 9, Time Control Type Standard, Sort/Pairing Rating International rating, FIDE mode ticked, Requested Absence ½ if the regulations say so.

Tournament Data → Tiebreak Criteria

What it does: the order in which players on equal points are separated (codes in section 16).

How to do it

  1. The table shows the chosen criteria; the top one decides first. Default: Direct Encounter, BH/C1, BH, SB, wins.
  2. Choose a criterion in the list and Add; Up / Down / Remove in the table.
  3. Treat forfeits as normal played games is FIDE's /P; below it how fully tied players are placed and the Koya limit (KS/Lx).

Check

Warning: in FIDE mode only FIDE-defined tie-breaks are offered. /P must be announced in the regulations. Tie-breaks change the ranking only, never the pairing.

Tournament Data → FIDE Titles

What it does: settings for title-norm checks (rating given to unrated opponents, minimum games 9/8/7, organizing federation, at least two federations) and the buttons Export FIDE Title Norm List, Create Excel File of FIDE Titles, FIDE Title Norm Check for a Player.

Warning: an estimate by B.01/B.02 – always verify before submitting. Confirm FIDE Title of Player is not implemented yet.

Tournament Data → Arbiters

What it does: links the arbiters' names to the FIDE list (FIDE ID, federation, arbiter title), needed for the norm reports.

How to do it

  1. Under Input From choose the role (chief, deputy, arbiter).
  2. Search (optionally Only search for arbiters in FIDE list), pick the person, Accept; someone not in the list: Enter manually.
  3. Repeat for every role shown in red as “Still unresolved”.

Tournament Data → Prizes

What it does: number and amounts of prizes, special prizes and how tied places share money (results in Lists → Prize List).

How to do it

  1. Number of overall prizes, Currency, the amount per place (blank/0 = no money).
  2. When places are tied on points: full amount by tie-break place, equal split, or the Hort system.
  3. + Add Special Prize (best woman, junior, rating band…); Edit / Remove.
A player gets one prize only: with money the higher one; without money a regular prize first.

Entry → Players...

What it does: add, edit and remove players; search the downloaded FIDE list by name or FIDE ID.

How to do it

  1. Type “Lastname, First” (e.g. Tasic, V) or a FIDE ID, Enter or Search FIDE Database, then Add at the right player: name, title, sex, federation and the standard, rapid and blitz ratings are filled in.
  2. Manual Entry: fill in the fields and Add Player.
  3. Edit → change → Save Changes (or Cancel); Remove deletes a player who has never been paired.
  4. At the bottom choose how names are written (Lastname Firstname, LASTNAME Firstname, LASTNAME FIRSTNAME); Close.

Check

Warning: Remove deletes without asking. A player who has played cannot be removed – use Pairing → Exclude Player. A player arriving after round 1 is added with Pairing → Set Up New Player. The hint “FIDE search currently uses sample placeholder data” in this window is out of date: the search uses the real list you downloaded.
Example: a girl without a FIDE ID plays her first event: Manual Entry → names, sex F, birth date, federation, category U10 → Add Player; she goes to the end of the starting list.

Entry → Teams...

What it does: for team events: teams, number of boards, base roster, team rating and the teams' starting order.

How to do it

  1. Set the number of boards; + Add Team (type name and federation) or Import from Excel... (a chess-results.com “Starting rank list” export: teams created, players placed by board, FIDE IDs checked).
  2. Roster...: the team's players and board order. Arrows ↑ ↓ set the starting number, or Number the teams by rating.
  3. Rating of a team: average of all or of the N highest, at least one woman, a missing rating from the other lists, a fixed value for unrated (see section 17).
  4. Exclude / Reactivate a team; Remove deletes it (its players stay in the player list). The WRTC line-up check is a switch here.
  5. Done.
Warning: changes take effect at once – there is no Cancel.
Example: a league of 10 clubs on 4 boards: boards 4 → Import from Excel → check every Roster → Done → Pairing Menu builds the schedule.

Entry → Round Dates...

What it does: date and time of every round (lists, TRF, the site).

How to do it

  1. Round 1 starts on the start date; enter its time. One-day event: Fill Remaining Rounds copies round 1 to all rounds, then correct the times. Several days: enter each round by hand.
  2. OK – every round needs a date and a time.

Entry → Enter Results...

What it does: enter the results board by board, in any paired round.

How to do it

  1. It opens at the first round with a missing result. Click a board row, then 1 - 0, ½ - ½, 0 - 1 or the forfeits 1F - 0F, 0F - 1F, 0F - 0F. Faster: keys 1, 2, 3. The selection then jumps to the next board without a result.
  2. MORE shows the rest: “special” results (½-0, 0-½, 0-0), not rated games (U) and ADJOURNED; EMPTY clears a board; LESS hides them again.
  3. Round -1 / Round +1; Print Blank Sheet prints the pairings with an empty result column; Done, then Ctrl+S.

Check

Warning: Clear All Results clears the whole round shown (after a confirmation). A changed result in an earlier round does not re-pair later rounds; delete rounds with Round → Delete Rounds if the change needs a new pairing. Forfeits score but are not played games.
Team events show matches: By Team / By Color change the view, and the button with a team's name opens the line-up for that match (Reset to Base Roster restores the base roster). PGN: Export → Import PGN attaches moves; the PGN link next to a board opens a viewer.

7. Pairing menu

Pairing → Pairing Menu... (F6)

What it does: pairs the next round. The program writes the tournament so far into a TRF file, the pairing engine (bbpPairings) pairs it, and the answer is turned back into boards with colours.

How to do it

  1. 1. Starting Rank List: if a player is not in place (for example a late entry), Sort Starting Rank List is highlighted – click it. Show Player List opens the list.
  2. 2. Players with a special status: excluded players (Reactivate), late entries (Don't Pair) and those sitting out (Pair Again); Don't Pair Player... and Exclude Player... open the same windows as the menu items.
  3. 3. Options: for round 1 the colour of board 1 (Random = drawn by lot by the program, C.04.2; White; Black). Shown below: Baku acceleration on/off, number of forbidden pairs, players and boards to be paired.
  4. Start Pairing Round N (an hourglass shows while it works). Afterwards: Pairing List, Enter Results, Manual Pairing.

Check

Warning: a paired round is never re-paired by itself; delete it (Round → Delete Rounds), correct, and pair again. Every manual change is marked in FIDE mode and the PTC reports it.
Example: 25 players, round 3, player X will be late and not play: Don't Pair Player... → X → Close; now 24 players, 12 boards, no pairing-allocated bye.

Pairing Menu for round robins, cups and teams

  1. Berger: set the starting order (move players up/down), choose Single or Double round robin, Generate Schedule: all rounds by the FIDE Berger tables, with the round-robin tie-breaks.
  2. Scheveningen: two equal groups; every player of A meets every player of B.
  3. Cup: seeding order, Generate Bracket (2-game matches, rapid/blitz/Armageddon on a tie, match for 3rd place; with a number that is not a power of 2 the top seeds get a bye in round 1).
  4. Team Berger / Team Scheveningen: schedule of the teams from Entry → Teams. Team Swiss: like the individual menu, paired by C.04.6.
Warning: the starting order / seeding cannot be changed once the schedule exists; enter everyone first.

Late entries, exclusions, byes

Pairing → Set Up New Player...

What it does: adds a player who arrives after round 1 (late entry), placed in the starting list by rating and paired like everybody else from the round they join (C.04.2 2.4); the bye goes by the pairing rules, not automatically to the newcomer. Missed rounds count as zero-point byes for the tie-breaks (C.07 16).

How to do it

  1. Enter the round they join (the proposal is the next, unpaired round).
  2. The Players window opens: add the player, close.
  3. F6 → Sort Starting Rank List if highlighted → pair.
Warning: a round that is already paired is not changed: place the player there with Manual Pairing.

Pairing → Exclude Player...

What it does: the player leaves the tournament: never paired again; their games stay in the standings.

How to do it

  1. Exclude next to the player, confirm.
  2. In rounds 1–4 you may give a score for the round they leave (½, 1 or 0; Cancel = none); after round 4 only when Tournament Data allows it.
Warning: it applies to all later rounds (one round: Don't Pair Player). Undo: Reactivate Player.

Pairing → Don't Pair Player

What it does: a requested absence for the next round only, worth “Points for a Requested Absence” (default 0).

How to do it

  1. Before pairing: Don't Pair next to the player, Close, F6.
Warning: individual Swiss only; only for the round to be paired next. Undo in the Pairing Menu with Pair Again. FIDE C.05 6.7: one half-point bye per player per tournament.

Pairing → Reactivate Player...

What it does: brings an excluded player back into the pairing (also the Reactivate button in the Pairing Menu).

Pairing → Forbidden Pairings...

What it does: pairs of players who must not meet (family, same club). Pick the player on the left, tick the others on the right.

Warning: the pairing engine does not know about them; the program checks after pairing and warns. Fix it with Manual Pairing (a manual change in FIDE mode). They are written to TRF-2026 record 260.

Pairing → Manual Pairing...

What it does: lets the arbiter override the engine in a paired round.

How to do it

  1. Enter the round. In FIDE mode the program asks for confirmation and marks the round as changed by hand.
  2. Select a pair: Change swaps colours, Remove Pairing makes both unpaired.
  3. Under Unpaired Players select two (first = White) and Pair Selected, or one and Give Bye. Close.
Warning: anyone still unpaired when you close gets a pairing-allocated bye automatically. Pairing two players who already met asks for confirmation.

Pairing → Team Knockout (WRTC Stage 2)...

What it does: WRTC 2026 Blitz Stage 2 (Art. 4.1.2.2) for 16 teams – see section 17.

Acceleration (Baku)

Tournament Data → General → Acceleration switches on the Baku Acceleration Method (FIDE C.04.7), the only acceleration method FIDE defines. The top 2×⌈N/4⌉ players (group GA) get virtual points before pairing: one point in the first half of the accelerated rounds, half a point in the rest; the accelerated rounds are the first half (rounded up) of the tournament. The choice is locked once round 1 is paired. The virtual points are handed to the pairing engine in XXA records, round by round, with the real points in the points column.

8. Round menu

Round → 0, 1, 2…

What it does: picks the round shown: Enter Results opens for it, and the status bar and Lists → Round List use it. 0 is the state before round 1.

Round → Delete Rounds...

What it does: deletes the pairings and results of the last rounds so they can be paired again.

How to do it

  1. Save first. Tick the round to delete from – every later round goes with it. Delete, confirm.
Warning: permanent; the only way back is a backup (.bak01…).
Example: round 5 is paired, then a round 4 result turns out wrong: delete round 5, correct round 4, F6.

9. Standings menu

Standings → Standings

What it does: ranks by points, then by the tie-breaks of Tournament Data in the order listed, then rating, then name.

How to do it

  1. Open; tick Show Prizes column if prizes are set; Print.

Check

Standings → Crosstable

What it does: every result: opponent's starting number, colour and result per round. Print it in landscape.

10. Lists menu

Every list opens in a window; Print opens the print preview.

Lists → Player List

All players, sorted A-Z, by Rating or Starting Rank; the tournament information (organizer, dates, arbiter, rounds, type, average rating) is printed above it.

Lists → Pairings List

Pairings and results of all rounds.

Lists → Round List...

Pairings of one round – the one picked in the Round menu, or the current one. Print it for the wall right after pairing.

Lists → Round Results (Detailed)...

Team events: the matches of a round with every board.

Lists → Match Cards...

Team events: one card per match with the boards and room for the captains' signatures.

Lists → Table Cards...

What it does: name cards that stand on the board next to each player, and cards for the tournament's arbiters. Each card is a paper “tent”: folded in half, with the upper half printed upside down, so the same text reads from the front and from the back. The organiser makes a template once (logo, tournament name, fonts, colours, what the card shows); the program then makes a card for every player and arbiter.

How to do it

  1. Enter the players (Entry → Players) and the arbiters (Entry → Tournament Data → Arbiters).
  2. Lists → Table Cards.... On the right is the first sheet at once: the first player's card and the chief arbiter's card.
  3. Ready-made: detailed (logos, tournament name, two coloured lines, a row with federation, title and rating, a big name) or Ready-made: simple (name, flag and the three-letter federation).
  4. Size: 2 tent cards per sheet (portrait, each half of the sheet is one card) or 1 large tent card per sheet (landscape).
  5. Tournament name (empty = the name from Tournament Data) and a second line (place, date); Choose image... for the organiser's logo and a second logo (FIDE, sponsor); text at the bottom (website, sponsor).
  6. Tick what the card shows (title, flag, federation, rating, starting number, club), how the name is written, the fonts and colours (one name colour for players, another for arbiters).
  7. Folding: strips at the top and bottom edge, and the fold mark (a thin line, two small marks at the edges, or none).
  8. What to print: players, arbiters or both, the order, and if needed only some starting numbers (e.g. 1-20, 35).
  9. Print preview, then Print or Save as PDF. Cut each sheet along the dotted line and fold each card along the mark.

Check

Warning: printers do not print up to the very edge (3–5 mm stay white), which is why the strips and fold marks sit a little inside. The template is kept in the tournament file only when the tournament is saved; a new tournament starts without one, so use Save template to file... and, in the new tournament, Load template....
Example: an open with 120 players and 4 arbiters: Ready-made: detailed, federation logo left, sponsor logo right, 2 tent cards per sheet: 62 sheets. A late entrant: type only their starting number in Only starting numbers and print that one card.

Lists → Team Composition...

Team events: every team's players by board, with results.

Lists → Board Prizes (TPR)...

Team events: the players of the same board number compete by performance rating; enter the minimum number of games (WRTC: 8); equal ratings go by games played, then lots.

Lists → Colour Allocation Check...

Colour history of every player and a mark for three equal colours in a row; individual Swiss and round robin only.

Lists → Statistics

Summary (players, titled players, federations, rated players, average rating), results by round (white/black wins, draws, forfeits, byes, not played), players by title and federation.

Lists → FIDE Rating Statistics

Estimated rating change (Rtg+/-), performance (Rp) and initial rating estimates.

Warning: an unofficial estimate; FIDE does the official calculation.

Lists → Prize List...

Winners with amounts by the Prizes tab; ties share money by the full, equal or Hort method.

Example: two players share 2nd–3rd (200 and 150 EUR) with “equal”: 175 EUR each.

Lists → FIDE Title Norm List...

Title-norm eligibility estimate for players (B.01).

Warning: unofficial – verify before submitting.

Lists → Arbiter Norm Reports...

Norm check and IA1/FA1 report (Excel) for each arbiter linked in Tournament Data → Arbiters, and the IT3 tournament report (Generate Tournament Report). Only what one tournament shows can be checked.

11. Export menu

Export → Export...

What it does: despite the name, it opens Attachments (Documents & Photos): regulations, schedule, poster (PDF, DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX, JPG, PNG, up to 10 MB) kept in name.attachments next to the saved file. Those ticked On chessresults.rs are uploaded when you publish.

How to do it

  1. Save the tournament first. + Add File(s)..., tick or untick On chessresults.rs, Open / Remove, Close; then Internet → Publish.

Export → Export to PGN...

The games of rounds From Round – To Round as a PGN file (headers, and moves where they were imported; Chess960 positions included).

Export → Import PGN...

Attaches the moves of a PGN file to the boards (by round and the names of White and Black); the message lists the games not matched.

Warning: it does not enter results – use Enter Results.

Export → the XML items (Swiss-Manager)

What it does: players, player results, teams, team pairings and team compositions in Swiss-Manager's XML format, both directions (section 18).

How to do it

  1. Individual event: Import Players (XML), then Import Player Results (XML), without reordering in between. Team event: Teams → Players → Team Pairings → Teamcompositions.
Warning: Import Player Results (XML) replaces all pairings and results of the open tournament without asking. Import players skips those with the same FIDE ID. Import into a new, empty tournament.

12. Tour Tools menu

Tour Tools → Tournament Type...

What it does: changes the tournament system.

Warning: change it before round 1 only. With paired rounds the program only shows a red note and changes it anyway; that is not a normal workflow. FIDE mode covers individual Swiss only.

Tour Tools → Split Tournament...

What it does: splits all players by rating into two new tournament files (groups A and B); the open tournament is not changed.

How to do it

  1. Rating cutoff: at or above → A, the rest (and unrated) → B; the preview shows the group sizes.
  2. Group names (added to the tournament name), Create Split Tournaments..., save A, then B.
  3. Open each file and run it as its own tournament.
Warning: pairings and results are not carried over – split before round 1. The cutoff is compared with the standard FIDE rating (national when missing), even in a rapid or blitz event.
Example: 80 entries, cutoff 1800 → “Memorial A” (45) and “Memorial B” (35).

Tour Tools → Sub-Tournaments...

What it does: for side events (blitz, rapid) run alongside: the ticked players go into a separate tournament file (Swiss or round robin). A player can be in several; the main list is not changed.

How to do it

  1. Name (“Rapid”), Swiss or Round Robin, Add Sub-Tournament.
  2. Tick the players (Shift+click fills a block).
  3. Generate File and choose where to save.
  4. Open the new file and set Time Control Type, rounds, schedule, time control and tie-breaks.
  5. Late entries: tick them and Update File – only before the sub-tournament starts.
Warning: a sub-tournament copies all data of the main event – change it in the new file. Update File rewrites the file with empty rounds: once the sub-tournament has started, all its pairings and results are lost (only .bak01 remains). Add late players inside the sub-tournament instead. Remove clears the row only; the file stays on disk.
Example: an Open of 120 with a blitz on the free afternoon: “Blitz”, Swiss, tick the 60 entries, Generate File, open it, Time Control Type Blitz, 9 rounds.

Tour Tools → Generator 960...

What it does: draws one of the 960 Chess960 starting positions (518 = the classical set-up) and assigns it to a round: Generate or type a number 0–959 and Show, choose the round, assign (or remove), Copy. In automatic mode the program draws the position when a round becomes current; manual positions are never touched. The position is printed above the round's pairings and written to PGN.

13. Rating Lists menu

Rating Lists → Update Rating Lists...

What it does: downloads the FIDE standard, rapid and blitz lists from ratings.fide.com (Download Latest); the table shows what is downloaded. Offline: put the ZIP files into data/rating-lists/standard (rapid, blitz).

Check at start-up

Example: FIDE publishes on the 1st of the month; download all three the day before the event.

Rating Lists → Update New Rating Players...

What it does: writes the standard, rapid and blitz ratings of the downloaded list to every player with a FIDE ID. It does not change titles, names or federations.

The program offers this itself (Update now / Later) when you open a tournament that has not started and whose players' ratings were not updated from the current month's list; the tournament then remembers the list and does not ask again until the next one.
Warning: do it before round 1: FIDE uses the rating at the start of the event. For a tournament that has started the program does not offer it.

14. Internet menu

Internet → Publish to ChessResults

What it does: uploads the tournament to chessresults.rs: standings, all rounds, crosstable, teams, data, links and the ticked documents.

How to do it

  1. Save the tournament; sign in once (Help → Account and Licence; the program opens it when needed).
  2. Publish; the message shows the address.
Warning: the site is not updated by itself – publish again after every pairing and every round of results. A valid Online licence is required.

Internet → Unpublish from ChessResults

Removes the tournament from the site after a confirmation; the file stays and can be published again.

Internet → View on ChessResults.rs

Opens the tournament's page in the browser.

Internet → Share link...

Copies the tournament's address for Viber, WhatsApp, e-mail; offers to open it. A tournament not yet published is reported, and nothing is copied.

Internet → LIVE broadcast...

Keeps the link of the live broadcast (Lichess or Chess.com) with the tournament. Once the tournament is published, its chessresults.rs page gets a LIVE tab with the boards of the Lichess broadcast, and a link to Chess.com. The way the games travel: e-boards → DGT LiveChess (or idChess) → Lichess or Chess.com → chessresults.rs.

  1. New broadcast on Lichess opens lichess.org/broadcast/new (a Lichess account is needed): create the tournament and a round for every round. As the source pick the Broadcaster App (it watches the folder DGT LiveChess writes into; turn on Combine PGNs per round in DGT) or a PGN link such as a LiveChess Cloud link.
  2. Copy players for Lichess: paste into the Lichess tournament settings (Replace player names, ratings and titles), so every player is shown with the right name, title and rating. Team events also have Copy teams for Lichess.
  3. Save round pairings as PGN: the games of a round (names, board order, FIDE IDs) before they start.
  4. Paste the broadcast link from Lichess into Lichess broadcast link, click Save and publish the tournament again.

Chess.com Events opens chess.com/events (Get Started; source: DGT Cloud link or PGN link); its event link goes into Chess.com event link and is shown on the site as a link. The same two links can also be typed in Tournament Data, Links tab. Only lichess.org and chess.com addresses are accepted.

15. Help menu

16. Tie-breaks

Standings → Standings ranks by points, then by the tie-breaks of Tournament Data → Tie-breaks in the order listed, then rating, then name. Crosstable shows every result.

The tie-break list

All tie-breaks of the FIDE list Mandatory Tie-Breaks (MTB26) for individuals are available, with their code as it is written in the TRF file:

CodeNameOptions
DEDirect Encounter/P

BPG, BWGGames played / won with Black
PSSum of progressive scores/C1 /C2
REPRounds elected to play
BHBuchholz/C1 /C2 /M1 /M2 /P
FBFore Buchholz/C1 /C2 /M1 /M2 /P
AOBAverage of opponents’ Buchholz/F
SBSonneborn-Berger/C1 /C2 /P

TPR, PTPTournament / Perfect tournament performance
APRO, APPOAverage performance (TPR / PTP) of opponents
STD, TPN, RTNGStandard points, pairing number, rating (defined by FIDE, not mandatory)

Modifiers: /Cn cut the n lowest values, /Mn median (cut n lowest and n highest), /P forfeits count as played games, /F use Fore Buchholz, /Lx move the Koya limit by x half-points. Anything FIDE does not define (for example “points with Black”) is written as OTHER_… in TRF files and is not offered in FIDE mode.

How they are computed

17. Other tournament types

Team pairing rules, team rating, line-ups, board prizes

Team pairing: a new Team Swiss tournament is paired by the FIDE Team Pairing System (Handbook C.04.6, from 1 February 2026), by the score chosen under Pairing Based On. A bracket that cannot be paired takes upfloaters from the scoregroups below; every bracket, upfloaters included, is paired in the order of the starting numbers (an upfloater does not simply play the lowest team of the bracket); colours never stop two teams from meeting. Tournament Data → Team Pairing Rules: colour preferences Type A (default), Type B or none; the pairing-allocated bye worth a draw (default) or a win; whether the secondary score (game points) decides the colours. The engine reproduces every round of the FIDE example “Mastering the FIDE Team Pairing System” (pairs and colours). Team tournaments saved before this change keep their old method: each team paired as one player by the Dutch engine (bbpPairings). The Olympiad Pairing Rules (Handbook D.02.02, also used for the FIDE World Team Rapid & Blitz Championships) exist in the program as research only and are switched off: on the real pairings of the 46th Olympiad the published pairing differs from the text of the rules in five of eight rounds (see the findings report), so they are offered only after FIDE has clarified them. The PTC can check a team file against them with the command line option -rules olympiad.

Rating of a team (Entry → Teams): the average of all its players, or of the N highest (Olympiad 3.1: 4, WRTC 3.1.e: 5), with at least one woman, a missing rating of the time control taken from the other lists (rapid, standard, blitz) and, if still missing, a fixed value (WRTC: 1400). Number the teams by rating sorts them (average, then the rating of the next player, then alphabetically) before the first round.

Line-up requirements (switch in Entry → Teams, WRTC 2026 Art. 2.1 and 4.2): 6 to 9 players, in every match a woman and a recreational player (never rated 2000 or more, or unrated; two different players), and a fixed board order in which a player rated more than 100 points above another has the lower board number. The line-up window shows a warning; nothing is blocked.

Board prizes (Lists → Board Prizes): the players of the same board number of the team lists compete by performance rating; a player needs at least the set number of games (WRTC: 8); equal ratings go by games played, then the draw of lots.

Team knockout (Pairing → Team Knockout, WRTC 2026 Blitz Stage 2, Art. 4.1.2.2): 16 teams seeded 1-16, 8-9, 4-13, 5-12, 2-15, 7-10, 3-14, 6-11 (any team can be changed). A duel is two matches scored 2-1-0; the team with more match points wins, game points do not count. A drawn duel goes to a blitz match, then a second blitz match, then a sudden death game: White has 4:00, the teams bid (at most 4:00) for Black, the lowest bid takes Black with that time (the same bid: lots decide the colours), a drawn game gives the match to Black. Winners advance; quarter final losers play for 5th place, semi final losers for 3rd. The window shows what is still to be entered.

Team rating prizes (Lists → Prize List, team tournaments; WRTC Art. 4.5.1): a team wins the “Under 2400” / “Under 2200” prize when in none of the standard, rapid and blitz lists (enter the March lists) the average of its five highest rated players, with a woman and 1400 for a missing rating, is higher than the limit; the best placed qualifying team wins.

Team tie-breaks

Choose them in Tournament Data → Tie-breaks (priority order, top decides first). They follow the FIDE Tie-Break Regulations art. 12–14 and 16 and are written to TRF with the FIDE codes:

CodeTie-break
EDEExtended Direct Encounter (art. 13.3): Direct Encounter with the primary score (match points, or game points when they decide the ranking); if that separates nobody, with the secondary score; every new subset of tied teams starts again.
EDEBT, EDEBB, EDET, EDEBEDE, and when exactly two teams are still tied in both MP and GP: Board Count then Top Board Results (EDEBT), Board Count then Bottom Board Elimination (EDEBB), Top Board Results (EDET) or Bottom Board Elimination (EDEB).
BC, TBR, BBEBoard Count (the lower the better), Top Board Results, Bottom Board Elimination (art. 12).
MPvGPGame points when match points decide the ranking, or the other way round.
EMMSB, EMGSB, EGMSB, EGGSBExtended Sonneborn-Berger (art. 13.2): total of the opponent (MP or GP) × what was scored against them (MP or GP); /C1, /C2 cut the contribution of the opponent(s) with the lowest score (art. 14.1.2).
SSSCScores and Schedule Strength Combination (art. 13.4): the secondary score plus Buchholz divided by the normalising factor (highest achievable primary score divided by the highest secondary score of one match, rounded towards zero; /Kx replaces it).
OTHER_WRTC1, OTHER_WRTC3FIDE World Team Rapid & Blitz Championships 2026, Appendix 2.I: TB1 = sum of IS(11) (game points scored against an opponent × its final match points; the best 11 of 12 opponents: the round of the pairing-allocated bye is left out, without a bye the opponent with the fewest match points), TB3 = sum of the match points of those opponents; a team that was unpaired in a round counts 1 match point for it; an unplayed match (all games by default) is worth all boards for the winner. TB2 is MPvGP. Not FIDE codes, so TRF carries the OTHER_ prefix. In the tie-break window the buttons WRTC Rapid and WRTC Blitz pools (game points, EMMSB, EGGSB, EDEBB) set the lists of Appendix 2.
BH, FB, AOB, PS, KS, WIN, WONThe individual tie-breaks for teams, with :MP or :GP for the score used and the usual /C /M /L modifiers. Buchholz-type tie-breaks are not offered in team round robins (art. 8).

A team’s bye is an unplayed round (art. 16): for the opponents it counts as awarded (a requested bye at the end of the tournament as a draw); for the team’s own tie-break it is played against a dummy whose score is the team’s own, at most a draw’s value times the number of rounds. Game points of a bye count as a standard win on every board for the board tie-breaks.

18. Import and export

TRF-2026 / TRF16 / TRF06

Swiss-Manager XML

Under Export: players, results, teams, team pairings and team compositions, in Swiss-Manager’s XML format, both directions. For a whole team event import in this order: Teams → Players → Team Pairings → Teamcompositions. One XML set is one tournament (Open and Women are separate tournaments). Files from Swiss-Manager may contain a bare & in names; the reader accepts that.

Other formats: PGN (games), Excel (team rosters from chess-results.com; title-norm certificates and arbiter norm reports are written as Excel files).

19. FIDE Mode

FIDE Handbook C.02.03, article 7.1.3, requires that a tournament handler program provide the following in FIDE mode. Switch it on in Tournament Data → General → FIDE mode (individual Swiss tournaments). The status bar then shows FIDE MODE.

FIDE requiresWhat SwissTour does
English interface + manualThe interface is switched to English and cannot be changed while FIDE mode is on. This manual is the online help (Help → User Manual, F1).
FIDE Swiss system + all FIDE acceleration methodsFIDE Dutch system (rules from 1 February 2026) through bbpPairings; Baku Acceleration (the only FIDE-defined method).
All mandatory tie-breaks (MTB26)All 50 individual codes with options. Only tie-breaks FIDE defines can be chosen; anything else would have to be written as OTHER_.
TRF-2026 import/export, older formats readableFile menu; TRF16 and TRF06 import.
Free PTC and RTGSections 20 and 21; both run from the command line.
Extras must not compromise FIDE pairings (7.1.4)Hand-made changes to a pairing ask for confirmation and mark the round; the compliance window lists such rounds.

Help → FIDE Mode… shows this list with the live status of the current tournament, and a button Check this tournament (PTC) that pairs every round again and compares it with what was played.

FIDE mode is what a program needs to be submitted for FIDE’s technical acceptance (TAPC); it is not an endorsement by itself.

20. PTC — Pairings and Tie-Breaks Checker

The PTC reads a TRF file (any of the three versions), and for every round:

  1. pairs the round again with the program’s own engine, knowing only the rounds before it (announced byes and acceleration included);
  2. compares the games, colours and the pairing-allocated bye with the file;
  3. recomputes the points and the tie-breaks named in record 212/202 and compares every player’s rank.
SwissTour.exe -check tournament.trf
SwissTour.exe -check tournament.trf -out report.txt
SwissTour.exe -check team-tournament.trf -rules olympiad

The report is printed, and also written to tournament.trf.ptc.txt (a Windows program cannot always print to the console). Exit code: 0 no discrepancy, 1 discrepancies, 2 the file could not be checked. Round robins, knock-outs and other types that are not paired by the FIDE Dutch system are reported as skipped for the pairing part, not guessed (their standings are still checked).

Team files

A TRF-2026 file of a team tournament (team sections 310 or 013, byes 320 and 240, forfeits 330, out-of-order line-ups 300, scoring 362, colour sequence 352) is read as teams: the matches and board results are rebuilt from the players’ own rows. Each team is then paired as one player by match points (game points when the type code says FIDE_TEAM_GP_MP) and the pairings, colours and byes are compared with the file; the match points, game points and ranks of every team (with the team tie-breaks of record 212) are recomputed and compared with record 310. The same reader is used by File → Import from TRF.

Limits: Article 16.2 abnormal assignments (record 299) are not applied, and a competition with its own pairing rules (for example the Olympiad pairing rules, Handbook D.02.02) can legitimately differ from the FIDE Dutch pairing this program makes.

21. RTG — Random Tournament Generator

The RTG plays complete random Swiss tournaments (results follow the FIDE rating table; draws, forfeits, requested byes and pairing-allocated byes occur) and writes them as TRF-2026 files, with the final ranks by the tie-breaks you name.

SwissTour.exe -rtg -players 60 -rounds 9 -seed 7 -out tournament.trf
SwissTour.exe -rtg -players 200 -rounds 11 -baku -tiebreaks DE,BH/C1,BH,SB -out big.trf

-out FILEWhere to write (random-tournament.trf)

22. Command line

CommandDoes
SwissTour.exe -check file.trf [-out report.txt]PTC (section 20)
SwissTour.exe -rtg … -out file.trfRTG (section 21)

From the project folder (developers): run-ptc.bat file.trf, run-rtg-file.bat out.trf 60 9 7, run-tests.bat (self-check of the whole program: PASS/FAIL per check) and run-rtg.bat 500 (SwissTour compared with the pairing engine on 500 random tournaments); node tests/engine-compare.js folder pairs TRF files with both JaVaFo 2.2 (rules until January 2026) and bbpPairings 6 and lists the differences.

23. Problems and answers

ProblemAnswer
Pairing a big tournament takes very long or fails with a memory messageHundreds of players on the same score are hard for the engine. Close other programs. A 1000-player field with one huge score group can need some time.
“Pairing impossible under the current rules”Too few players for the number of rounds (players would have to meet twice), or forbidden/excluded players leave no legal pairing. Reduce the rounds or pair by hand.
A value I typed changedNumbers are held inside the limits of their field, dates must be real dates, < > are removed from text. The message after OK lists what changed.
Rp / TPR shows nothingOne game is not enough; forfeits never count; unrated opponents count as 1400 in team Rp lists and are left out of TPR tie-breaks.
The PTC says a round is DIFFERENTEither the round was changed by hand, made by another program with a different interpretation, or the file lacks information the engine needs (number of rounds in 142, acceleration in 250, announced byes in 240). The report lists the boards that differ.
